Theatre and Performance are viewed as art forms and as social behaviour, within style, history and culture politics, as well as social and political communication. We consider a broad scope of performing arts including dance, opera, puppetry, mime and non-Western theatre and also look into performative practices such as cultural events, concerts, sport events. We have a special focus on dramaturgy, gender performances, the public sphere, and intercultural as well as intermedial performances. 2016 we opened an International Master Programme in Performance Studies (IMAPS). Additional, we offer a range of free MA courses open to Master students enrolled in other MA programmes inside and outside of Stockholm University.

Research specialties are historiography, performance analysis, drama analysis, gender studies, children’s theatre, acting traditions, dance theory and history, opera performance and history, performance and activism, theatre and the public sphere.
