Programme content

The programme consists of compulsory courses for all students in the programme, compulsory courses within the relevant specialisation, as well as optional courses offered by various departments across the Faculty of Humanities. The languages of instruction for the national specialisations (Swedish, Scandinavian Languages, Ancient Greek, Baltic Languages, Bilingualism, Czech, Finnish, Language Education Latin, Polish, and Russian) are English and Swedish, as well as the language associated with the area of specialisation (where applicable). For the international specialisations (English Applied Linguistics, English Linguistics, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Typology and Linguistic Diversity), the language of instruction is English, as well as the language associated with the area of specialisation (where applicable). The degree project constitutes a thesis on a topic related to the area of specialisation.

Facts about the programme

Scope: Two years of full-time study with the option to finish with a Degree of Master of Arts (60 credits) after one year.

Prerequisites for each specialisation: Swedish: Bachelor of Arts in Swedish, Swedish as a second language, Scandinavian languages, or equivalent, with a degree project in Swedish. Scandinavian Languages: Bachelor of Arts in Scandinavian languages. Ancient Greek: Bachelor of Arts in Ancient Greek. Baltic Languages: Bachelor of Arts in Baltic languages. English Applied Linguistics: Bachelor of Arts in English, in addition to English proficiency documented by one of the following internationally recognised language tests: TOEFL, including TWE, with a minimum score of 630 (written test)/267 (computer-based test)/109 (Internet-based test), Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (A or B) or IELTS with a total score of at least 7,5 (and no part below 7), or equivalent.English Linguistics:  Bachelor of Arts in English, in addition to English proficiency documented by one of the following internationally recognised language tests: TOEFL, including TWE, with a minimum score of 630 (written test)/267 (computer-based test)/109 (Internet-based test), Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (A or B) or IELTS with a total score of at least 7,5 (and no part below 7), or equivalent.Finnish:  Bachelor of Arts in Finnish. Bilingualism: Bachelor of Arts in linguistics, a language subject, or another relevant subject (e.g. pedagogy, psychology, or social anthropology), and at least 30 credits in linguistics or equivalent (either included in the degree or taken separately). Typology and Linguistic Diversity: Bachelor of Arts in linguistics comprising at least 90 credits, including a degree project in general linguistics. German: Bachelor of Arts in German.

The programme provides students with advanced knowledge and skills, and can serve as preparation for doctoral studies or a future career in a field related to language.
