The University would like to better understand students’ and teachers’ experiences with this Spring’s online education. The purpose is to learn from these experiences so that the University is better equipped for the future and provides sustainable teaching that supports student learning, not least because some distance learning may continue into the fall. Stockholm University is conducting a survey to see how students and teachers experienced in-person and online teaching during the Spring. The survey answers will be very meaningful to our continued planning and development of teaching.
The survey is part of the University’s participation in the “CALIE project”. The CALIE project is a collaboration among higher education institutions in Sweden and the US meant to strengthen universities’ ability to meet long-term societal challenges and develop strategical tools for innovative education and academic leadership.
“There is a lot of curiosity about how well distance learning has functioned during the Spring and how teachers and students have experienced it. What can we learn from these experiences and how can we improve distance learning while also developing the university’s digital teaching potential? Those are the questions we want to answer through the survey”, says Klara Bolander Laksov, director of the Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL).
Klara Bolander Laksov, along with Joakim Edsjö, the chair of the undergraduate education committee at the Faculty of Science, along with 2001 Physics Nobel Prize laureate Carl Wieman, are developing the survey together. This will be translated and adapted for SU by a group of educational developers from CeUL. The survey will be in English and Swedish. In the next few weeks, the survey will be emailed to every department through the departments’ teaching contact person and directors of studies, and in turn will be sent to teachers and students involved in distance learning. During the summer the results will be analysed at both the department and university-wide levels.
“The results from the survey will hopefully be presented in the early fall, but departments will be able to see the descriptive data essentially as soon as the survey is closed at the end of June”, says Bolander Laksov.
