Swedish Personal Identity Number

International students who study in Sweden for 12 months or longer must apply for a Swedish personal identity number, “personnummer”. The Swedish Tax Agency “Skatteverket” is the authority responsible for issuing the personal identity number. Application for a Swedish personal identity number, “personnummer” must be done in person at one of Skatteverket’s offices.

Please remember to bring the following documents:

  • Valid passport proving your citizenship (or national ID for EU/EEA citizens)
  • Invitation Letter/Notification of Selection Results as proof of admission to the university (showing length of studies)
  • Registration certificate (proof of enrolment)
  • Information regarding your (temporary) address in Sweden, including apartment number
  • Residence permit: UT card and decision (Non EU/EEA citizens, including Swiss citizens)
  • Assurance signed by yourself that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay (EU/EEA citizens)
  • Valid European Health Insurance card (EU/EEA citizens)
  • Original or certified copy of document showing your martial status (if applicable)
  • Original or certified copy of birth certificate for children (if applicable)

Students with a Swedish personal identity number have the legal duty to:

  • Report changes of address within Sweden to Skatteverket at www.adressandring.se or by visiting one of Skatteverket’s offices in person.
  • Report to the Skatteverket when moving from Sweden by submitting the form “Notification, Moving Abroad”. This is if your will leave Sweden in order to live abroad for at least one year. The report must be made at least one week before departure. You should use the form “Notification, Moving Abroad”.
