The article reports an empirical study of readers’ selections of reading environments in relation to genre, medium (print, computer, phone, etc.), and the purpose of reading (leisure, study, etc.).

The focus of the report is the participants’ sensitivity to the physical presence of other people while they read – a surprising emergent trend in the data, with potential implications for the fields of literacy and literary education. The study was conducted in Croatia, Czech Republic, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
